News on Nigerian Import Prohibition List

Clarification On The Removal Of Some Items From The Import Prohibition List – Nigeria.

Clarifications on some aspects of Circular No. BD.122371/S.403/Vol.1/206, dated 19th November 2010, on the removal of some items from Import Prohibition List.

Further to my circular Ref. No. BD.122371/S.403/Vol.1/206 dated 19th November 2010 on the above subject, please note that in addition to Government’s policy of protecting the local industry and curtailing revenue leakages, the changes to the tariff structure are aimed at supporting the productivity and competitiveness of the domestic industry as well as extending the frontiers of free trade. In this respect, this Circular is aimed at clarifying the items exempted from the Import Prohibition List vide our circular under reference.

2. For the avoidance of doubt, the items affected by the above-mentioned circular remain as follows:

(i) cassava (raw, unprocessed);

(ii) toothpick;

(iii) furniture (excluding locally produced items), and;

(iv) textile fabrics and articles (excluding locally produced items).

3. accordingly details of the items affected by the circular of 19th November 2010 are contained in the following schedule:

Implementing Agencies are hereby directed to ensure that only items indicated in the relevant column of the above schedule are allowed for importation into the country.

4. Furthermore, the extension of the age of imported used motor vehicles (H.S. Codes 8703.1000 – 8703.9000) from 10 to 15 years shall apply, subject to periodic reviews, while items of furniture under H.S. Codes 9401.9000.91 and 9403.9000.91,which are not under prohibition, still retains the current duty rate of 5%.
